Jaeyeon Lee, PhD, Robotics Scientist
Jaeyeon Lee has advanced in his research career since 2021, starting as an ORISE Digital Health Fellow at the Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center (TATRC). Currently, he actively pursues his research as a Robotics Scientist at TATRC, specializing in medical and surgical robots, machine vision for healthcare applications, haptics, motion planning and control, and AI-enabled robotic systems.
Growing up in a small town in South Korea, Jaeyeon's passion for robotics emerged early in his life. Throughout childhood, he dedicated his spare time to crafting robots using available materials. His professional journey began when he joined the Robotics Club during his sophomore year. Inspired by this experience, he pursued higher education, earning a master's degree in South Korea. Seeking further knowledge, he ventured to the US, completing his Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas in 2016.
After academic accomplishments, Jaeyeon contributed to the McGovern Medical School of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston as a Sr. Research Associate before transitioning to Sr. Control Engineer at ColubrisMX Inc. in 2017. Armed with three years of industrial experience, he returned to the research domain, focusing on robotics systems for medicine. In 2020, he conducted research in telemedicine, microrobots, and machine learning within the Department of Biomedical Engineering at George Washington University. His journey led him to join the Medical Robotics and Autonomous Systems (MedRAS) division of TATRC in early 2021, contributing to advancements in the field.
Jaeyeon believes technology enhances the world and saves more human lives. As a roboticist, he sees himself as an idealist, confident that the robot systems he develops will improve the world and save lives. In leisure time, Jaeyeon enjoys traveling, seeking a nice local coffee, going for walks, and engaging in automobile mechanics.
